Development Director

In its first 10 years, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer has developed into a $4M+ organization with plans to keep growing. Cookies for Kids’ Cancer seeks an experienced Development Director to lead efforts that will support the organization’s expansion. The primary responsibility for this position will be to build out opportunities for Corporate Giving and Individual Major Gifts.

The Development Director will manage two staff members who focus on grassroots fundraising. The Director will collaborate closely with the Special Events Director to maximize event partnerships and fundraising opportunities. In addition, s/he will consult with the Cookie Sales Manager to help identify new corporate gifting/cookie sales opportunities.

To be successful in this position, the Director needs to be skilled at working leads that have been cultivated by the Founder and Board Members. The Director will be responsible for working with volunteer leadership to secure commitments from new contacts. The perfect fit would be someone who loves to network, enjoys making things happen, and revels in the ability to identify opportunities and steer them to successful, quantifiable results.


KEY RELATIONSHIPS

The Development Director reports to the Executive Director.

This position will interact closely with the Founder (currently serving as the Interim Executive Director), Marketing Director, COO and Events Director along with other management staff.

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES

Corporate and Major Gifts Fundraising (Lead)

  • Explore and prioritize the multitude of opportunities that currently exist among the founders, Board and other supporters, to develop and cultivate leads, and ultimately secure philanthropic commitments.
  • Network with existing Cookies for Kids’ Cancer constituents, and others who can generate new donor leads.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive acquisition, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plan for major stakeholders. including specific offers tailored to different prospects.
  • Prepare presentations, proposals, corporate partnership packets and other materials for individual and corporate support.
  • Plan and lead donor meetings and pitches.
  • Involve and direct others who participate in fundraising efforts.
  • With Marketing’s support, develop outreach campaigns (email, direct mail, social media, etc.) to generate new leads and create opportunities with existing and past supporters.
  • Coordinate with other staff to maximize cross-selling opportunities (e.g., selling cookies to corp. supporters, pitching gala tickets to major donors, etc.)
  • If desired and feasible, plan and run new cultivation events to aid in fundraising (e.g., wine tasting, special dinner, art event, etc.)
  • Perform ongoing evaluations of fundraising program to ensure it maintains industry-standard levels for retention, engagement, donations, etc.
  • Play an active role on the budget team, which performs budgeting and financial oversight in collaboration with the COO.
  • Participate in organization-wide planning and priority setting.

OTHER FUNDRAISING SUPPORT

  • Manage and provide insight to Grassroots team to maximize fundraising opportunities and awareness around the country.
  • Collaborate with Events staff to increase/maximize event ticket sales, auction and other fundraising activities associated with Cookies for Kids’ two major galas (Chefs NY and Chefs NC).
  • Collaborate with Cookie Sales Manager to maximize cookie sales to both individuals and corporations.

PARTNERSHIP WITH FOUNDER/INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

  • Assist the Founder/Interim Executive Director in her efforts to cultivate and close opportunities.
  • Consult with Founder/Interim Executive Director on her pitches and presentations.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational and personal sales skills.
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of fundraising plans leading to measurable growth.
  • Experience developing and managing development budgets.
  • Experience establishing target goals for self and team and achieving them.
  • Demonstrated successful experience writing pitches, making presentations and negotiating/closing deals.
  • Ability to periodically travel for donor meetings and fundraising events.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce and using data for improving fundraising outcomes.
  • Understanding of the development of successful fundraising campaigns involving different channels (email, social media, Google AdWords, etc.)
  • Digital literacy.
  • Experience managing and developing staff.
  • Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, creative problem solver, and strong collaborator.
  • Superior oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time.

Other:

  • Minimum of 10 years experience in fundraising
  • Experience planning events is a plus
  • Experience with health related non-profit entities a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Graduate degree in a related field is desirable
  • Experience working with volunteers is desirable

Over the past 10 years, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer has granted nearly $16 million (and counting!) to childhood cancer research, funding 110 research grants, resulting in more than 42 new treatments now in clinical trial and available to children today.

Revenues: $4 million currently, projected to grow to $5.5M+ by 2021.
