At 4 years old Lena was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma Cancer. When she was originally diagnosed she went through 6 rounds of chemo, radiation and surgery to remove the main tumor as well as a stem cell transplant and immunotherapy treatment. She was cancer free for a year and a half. In October 2012 she relapsed... she had a soft tissue tumor in the lymph nodes on her neck.
At this point we were given the option of going to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to see if there was any treatment they could offer or taking Lena home to be on comfort care. We choose to take her to Sloan. There, Lena underwent 3 rounds of chemo, surgery and radiation and also started a few new trial drugs - 3F8 and vaccine.
We thought we were in the clear… Lena went down to NYC for routine scans and her vaccine shot and it was at this time they found another soft tissue tumor near her tailbone. She immediately had surgery the next day on 7/16/15. Then she started chemo on 7/20/15. She now will need two more rounds of chemo and 14 treatments of radiation. She will then start the trial drug 3F8 again.
We have a very long road ahead of us. Through all of this Lena has continued to try to be herself. She is a very fun loving 9 year old. She is so caring and loving. Lena is 1 of 6 - she has a brother and 4 sisters. One of Lena’s fears is not being able to get treatment at Sloan because of our finances and I’m unable to work due to Lena’s illness.
