My mother and I found out about Cookies for Kids Cancer around three years ago. I had just gotten back from a soccer leadership camp. There, each player had to develop a community service project of her own to then complete within the next year. My original idea had been to organize a large bake sale and donate all the proceeds to pediatric cancer research.
Baking is more than a hobby to my mom, it is a bit of an obsession. She loves decorating cakes, cupcakes and cookies. As any mother would, she read Liam's story and immediately was more than enthusiastic to participate in this fundraiser. So we began the process. My mother and father had been skiing at Hunter Mountain in New York for years, so we decided to try and hold our bake sale there. Thankfully, the Katskill Mountain Club allowed us to hold our bake sale in the lobby!
We got right to work baking. My mother and I were sure to include a wide variety of cookies, from classic chocolate chip to hand decorated heart-shaped sugar cookies. Our third year my mom made the cutest snowman cookies that nearly sold out the first night. Each bake sale we sold for three nights. The first year my mother, sister and I raised over $700, the second year around $900 and this past year we raised over $1000! It is so rewarding and I know it would make my friend Elizabeth proud. Every little bit makes a difference, and my family cannot wait to do it again next year!
