Hello Friends and Family,
As most of you know, our family has been deep in the fight against pediatric cancer for nearly two years with our son, Samuel. Like most of you, before that time, we were blissfully unaware of it. However, now we know first hand what a cancer diagnosis means to a child and what it does to them as well as their family. As anyone would expect, it is hard and it is scary. What surprised us, though, is how underfunded pediatric cancer research is. While there have been hundreds of new drugs developed for adult cancers over the past 20 years, there have only been 3 new drugs for children fighting cancer. About 900 adult cancer drugs are in the drug development pipeline and almost none for children's cancer. Pharmaceutical companies fund 60% of all adult cancer research, but they do no childhood cancer research because it is not profitable. Cancer is the #1 cause of death of children by disease in the U.S. There are 40,000 U.S. children actively battling cancer right now, but less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute's budget goes to all childhood cancers combined. The NCI (National Cancer Institute) budgets more money for prostate cancer research than all childhood cancers combined. The average diagnosis date for prostate cancer is 66. Average diagnosis date for childhood cancer is 6. American Cancer Society only contributes 1% of their funding to curing childhood cancer.
That is why we have decided to partner with Cookies for Kids Cancer and Momcology and have a bake sale to help raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research. Funds donated will go to the Children's Oncology Group Phase I Trials. It is our hope that someday more effective and gentler treatments will be found for kids like our son, Samuel.
Thank you for your support,
