Dear Charlotte Good Cookies,
I am excited to share with you all the date of the 10th Annual Cookies For Kids’ Cancer Bake Sale. Can you believe this is our 10th year on DECEMBER 9, 2017? I can still remember the first sale in my front yard during Festival in the Park weekend. Since that first CFKC bake sale so much has changed but ONE thing has stayed the same, money raised has gone to research for children. We have donated funds raised each and every year to Cookies For Kids’ Cancer and they have awarded grants to seven of the nation's leading pediatric cancer centers to advance the development of less toxic, more effective treatments for children battling cancer. Those seven pediatric cancer centers are Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Texas Children's Cancer Center, and University of California San Francisco. Support from Good Cookies like YOU has helped Cookies for Kids' Cancer fund 91 childhood cancer research grants, leading to 36 promising new treatments and clinical trials available to children fighting cancer TODAY. For a list of each grant funded please click here. The other thing that has stayed the same is that childhood cancer is still the leading cause of death by disease for children. As you all know, I don’t need to be reminded of that statistic. It has been almost four years since Grier lost his life to Neuroblastoma after a 6-½ year fight. He along with all the kids I met along the way in each of our hospitals, LCH, MSKCC and CHOP have been my inspiration for raising awareness and money for this underfunded disease. Funding research for childhood cancer research is the only thing that will change the statistics for children.
If you have experienced the good cookie ‘spirit’ of the bake sale you know it is #morethanjustabakesale. I am still amazed at all we have accomplished over the years with this model of fundraising. We have stayed true to spending as little as possible to raise as much as possible for children. We have done this through generous donations of our local bakeries, our friends and family bakers, printers, churches (our tables), signs and banners, and so much more. It is not uncommon for charities to spend a lot to raise money- we have not had to do that at all.
As we get closer to December it is time to ask for help. Yes, we will need bakers so our tables will have all the yummy baked goods on them but it is too early to preheat the ovens. Right now we need sponsors for our T- Shirts. We also need friends and family to make an online fundraising page and commit to asking 10 friends and family to make a donation. Both of these requests will give us a head start to funding a clinical trial for children. Will you help us this year? I have a little secret—I hate asking people for help… but this year I have decided I am asking EVERYONE! And I want you to ask everyone too. This is my last year leading this fundraiser and I want to end it STRONG. It has been a great tradition for our family but it is time to pass the baton. I wanted to end last year but Grace asked me to do it one more year and end during her senior year. With a little coaxing from her and other friends, I decided year 10 is a better time for change.
