David Smith - Hough High School
Cornelius, NC

I've known Grier Christenbury's parents since high school. Watching Grier and his family as he's battled pediatric cancer for over 5 years reminds me just how carefree high school really is. And now, as a high school soccer coach, I know how lucky these kids are to be healthy and I also know that some of them might be friends for life. So it seemed like the right thing to do to support the cause the Christenburys care so much about by hosting the Cookies for Kids' Cancer/Hough Soccer Invitational Soccer Tournament.

The tournament was an all-day event held on a Saturday at Hough High School Stadium. Between 500 and 600 people attended which was key since a portion of the ticket sales went directly toward the cause. The tournament featured 4 games of men's high school soccer with top teams from Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Asheville.

In addition to the fun of the sport on a perfect September afternoon, the bake sale kept the crowd from getting hungry. With lots of cookies and brownies and cupcakes to pick from, everyone had the chance to find something they like. In the end, we raised over $3,200 for Cookies for Kids' Cancer and we're planning on making this an annual event.

In the spring, we hosted the women's' version of our Cookies for Kids' Cancer/Hough Invitational. It featured 3 games of women's' high school soccer with all 6 teams later making the state playoffs.

The women's' event raised close to $3000 thru the Bake Sale, ticket sales and money from the concessions at the stadium. This was a very special day/night and we look forward to our mens' event.
